A couple of weeks back, TOTS shared Suma’s paragliding experience while she was in Dharamsala. Well, that wasn’t the only adventure we are sharing from our 2017 travels. Both of us finally got to tick off skydiving from our bucket list and the best part of this experience was sharing it with our respective husbands and our little brother. So it was really a great feeling to share our first skydiving experience with our loved ones.

You guys have to agree, at some point in time every one of us considers the idea of trying out something crazy and adventurous. Skydiving was one of those things we always dreamed of doing and finally on our last family trip to Germany we decided to take the jump. Once all of us were onboard with the idea, we booked our skydive experience with TandemMichl who conduct skydiving in the Southern part of Germany. As we were spending a major part of our holiday in Munich, they suggested us to book the jump at Günzburg, which is about an hour away from Munich city.
The day started out bright sunny which was a major concern for us as it was raining for few days before our adventure. Our booking was for early noon and as we got to the drop zone, the place was humming with activity. We met up with Michl who was leading our gang in the tandem skydiving. On completing necessary paperwork, Michl gave us a demo on how our posture should be while jumping from the plane, during the free-fall and landing etc. Once we were done with the briefing and ground training, we donned our jumpsuits and all the necessary accessories (harness, helmet, sunglass) almost looking like angry bird characters.

We were five of us in total, so Michl suggested that we have to do the jump in two batches as the plane could not accommodate all of us. We all were allocated with a personal tandem master who would guide us through the jump. All geared up, we hopped on to our plane and as it started flying higher and higher our heart started beating faster anticipating what was ahead of us. Hearts in our throat, we kept eyeing through the plane window, watching the land getting more distant by the minute. The 15-minute plane ride gave us enough time to contemplate and think our decision through, fear and excitement conducting an inner battle.

Once we reached the altitude of 4000m, the tandem master opened the plane door and one by one our fellow jumpers got out. As our tandem master got us to the edge of the plane door, our guide instructed us to put our head back and cross our arms, we had a second to realize this is a point of no backing out. With a blink of an eye, we were out of the plane falling freely from the sky with excitement winning the battle and finally putting our fears to rest. We are floating mindlessly in funny circles, confused for a split second with everything gets blurred. So when our tandem master tapped on our shoulder to free our arms it was like a good dose of reality that we have actually gone ahead and done this.
The 60-second free fall was the purest form of adrenaline rush! Hands open, we screamed our heart’s content with happiness, (although no voice comes out due to the wind speed) enjoying the cold winds gushing upon our faces. We felt weightless, falling down from the sky passing through the clouds, freely like a bird (almost forgot that we had our diving master along with us!). As we got closer to 1500m, our tandem master pointed us to buckle up for the next stage, which was opening the parachute.
The parachute opens up swiftly bringing a little stillness to our jump. At this point, we are a little disappointed that the free fall was over. But soon we were overcome with the happy feeling looking at the view below us. We glide above the fields, watching the Bavarian beauty stretching for miles long. The green landscapes are totally breathtaking. After few fun tricks with the parachute, we glide down to the drop zone where our mom was waiting anxiously for all of us to land safely. The tandem instructor asked us to lift up our legs for the landing and within seconds we are sliding off the green grass to stop.
We just sat there for a minute or so, taking in the whole moment, letting it sink what we really just did. Feeling really proud of us, we cheer each other and walk back to the waiting area to greet our mom. And just like that our dream adventure was done! Skydiving was one of the best travel experiences we have had so far, nothing can ever replace the feeling of being completely free and flying like a bird in the air without a care in the world!

That sounds like such a cool but very scary experience. I have extreme fear of heights so I don’t think I would be able to dare this one. But it was so cool of you to document everything – after all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience.
Thank you Abigail :).
If I were on that plane with you…those 15 minutes of climbing the skies…I think I would have so changed my mind! Ahhhh I am so fearful of heights! But what an adrenaline rush this experience must have been! And I can only imagine how amazing the view looked like from high above. 60 seconds of free fall – WOW! I totally would be screaming my heart out too! Maybe one day I will overcome my fear for heights and try skydiving!
Wish you all the best! We hope you overcome the fear soon :).
You’re all insane! Think I’d have hung out with your mum on the nice, firm, ground. Love the photos though.
Thank you Cassie. We were one crazy bunch out there :D.
Crazy people! Can’t believe you made it! Flying up in the sky as birds making real the dreams of Icarus. “We felt weightless, falling down from the sky passing through the clouds, freely like a bird”… It is such a poetic way to describe what you felt. Your words make me feel I should try soon… Really beautiful experience, and very nice writing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Gabi!
Wow, it looks like you had an amazing time. I still haven’t tried skydiving yet but the hubby did for his 40th birthday and loved every minute of it. He went around with a grin plastered on his face for at least three days afterward. And for you to get to go with your family. I still might have to jump out of the perfectly good plane yet. 🙂
Hahaha, we are sure your hubby will be happy to help you make the jump with him!
Oh yeah!
That’s what adventure is all about. throwing caution to the wind and taking a jump. Both literal and figurative.
You say nothing could ever replace it as the best travel adventure. But I challenge that, I’m sure you will find something that comes close!
Thanks for sharing. Keep travel blogging. Adventure is better shared with friends!
Thank you Antony! We would be happiest if we come across anything this spectacular :).
Amazing! I most certainly want to try skydiving one day – the adrenaline rush and having a bird’s eye view of that picturesque Bavarian scenery really seems captivating and enticing. Definitely have to get that ticked off my bucket list one day. Thanks for the sharing! 🙂
Welcome Nathan! The scenery looks stunning from the top and very captivating!
Amazing. I am still waiting for this experience
..
Hope you get to experience it soon.
This sounds like such an exciting experience. I’d love to go skydiving someday but I need to convince my husband first. It’s probably the closest I’ll get to flying like a bird. Your mum must have been so worried. Mine would have been too.
yea, she was sitting on edge of her seat and was deeply relieved when we all landed back safely.
Wow! This looks amazing! I have always wanted to skydive, but I don’t know if I would have the guts. However, those pictures are so awesome that they are encouranging me to give it a go. It looks like an unforgettable experience, especially in such a cool place like Germany! Glad you guys had fun!
It was indeed one of the memorable experience of our life!
Wow it must be so adventurous and like an actual stunt. I have fear of heights so never tried paragliding, but wonder that it must be so beautiful from above. Southern Germany is so beautiful and from heights it must be more beautiful. Thanks for sharing and I may try this sometime…..
Oh yes please do, it is just amazing!
Wow, what a thrilling experience it would have been the moment you jumped off the aircraft into the nothingness under you! Didn’t you have that uncomfortable sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach? I would never have the courage to do this, but kudos to you. Hope you find many more adventures that you crave 🙂
Thank you Punita! There were zillions things going on in our minds before made the jump, but in the end it was just excitement.
Oh I am so scared of heights. And it looks so cool and family affair for you. Incredible indeed.
I am now slightly tempted to do this.
Oh do try this Indrani! You will love it.
Kudos to you guys. This is not for the faint hearted . I bet no voice would have come out from me during that free fall. I doubt I would have even opened my eyes. You ladies look so cute in those outfits.
