Malnad treat at Vihangama, Thirthahalli.

There is something magical about staying close to a water body like a lake, a river or a sea. One can spend hours listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing the shore or the soft burbles of the flowing water and feel a sense of calmness all around. And this is exactly what we were looking forward to when we planned a family getaway at Vihangama Holiday Retreat.

Vihangama Holiday Retreat is a beautiful homestay located in the outskirts of the beautiful town of Thirthahalli in Shimoga. With the swiftly flowing Tunga River on one side and a long stretch of Areca nut farm on the other side, this seemed like an ideal place to spend before the summers began. After going through their website, which gave us all the information required, we booked the riverside villas.

The drive from our hometown, Karkala to the retreat was about 3 hours taking us through some incredibly beautiful scenic locations of Malnad region We reached Vihangama around mid-noon to the lovely view of the lazy countryside. As the place is located midst a private estate, the first glimpse of the rustic surroundings makes instantly relax and be a part of it. After checking in to our rooms and quick freshening up, we decided to take a stroll around the property.

There are 4 villas facing the river, with single and double bedrooms, and since it was entire family, we took u the double bedroom villa. The bedrooms are simple and quaint depicting the local Malenadu architecture with a double bed and an attached dressing room and bath. There is a spacious balcony facing the river on the backside and this is what we feel is the best part of the villa. One can literally spend hours here watching the Tunga River along with the beautiful view of the fauna in the background. With a cup of tea and some evening snacks, we were happily ensconced in our own private world enjoying the feeling of being connected to nature.

We wandered the estate until the sunset and then took a quick detour of the Thirthahalli town, getting back to the villa just in time for dinner. The dinner was a quiet affair of freshly made akki roti (rice roti) and spicy chutney and some local delicacies set in a small buffet in the common dining hall (sadly we do not have any delicious food pictures). There was a certain nip in the air and it came as a welcoming change from the humid weather back home. There was cute hammock tied just outside our room and after a little tug of war (literally!!) among us siblings, we took turns to lie on it and gaze at the stars.

Next morning was a flurry of activities as we had an event to attend nearby and hence trying to make ourselves move from the comfy bed. Once awake the first thing we did was rush to the balcony to catch a glimpse of the early morning view. It was completely covered with fog outside and with our teeth’s chattering we waited for the fog to lift off and the sun to make its presence felt. Nothing beats the feeling of enjoying the still morning air, listening to birds chirping far away and the delicious sound of the flowing river!!!

After a light breakfast at the estate, we bid adieu to this beautiful place, disheartened that we couldn’t spend more time here as we had intended on initially. The Vihangama Retreat might not be a quintessential luxury getaway, but it surely bowls you over with the simplicity and natural beauty. The picture-perfect surroundings and the peaceful atmosphere gives you a sense of calm living you replete and happy in the end.

    1. Thank you dear 🙂 This is an ideal family getaway and we highly reccomend this place if you want to enjoy a peaceful and less commercial location.

  1. This looks like a nice and relaxing place. I would love to just lie in the hammock and read for a few hours. I actually had no clue where this was and had to google it to find that it is India 🙂

    1. Hahah sorry about not mentioning about the exact location in the post, will update it soon and thanks for visiting our blog 🙂

  2. This is a charming place, a great place to relax and commune with nature. Will bookmark for future reference. Loved your writing style and the pictures.

  3. Seems like a very tranquil place…a little too much for my taste. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the city too much but too quiet places freak me out…maybe watched too many horror movies.

I love nature and the peaceful outdoors but only during the day! Night comes and I can’t sleep with the sounds of crickets and things creaking around the house.

  4. I have never even heard of Shimoga and it looks so peaceful. I quite enjoy slow travel whilst at such places – Just a great way to unwind from the hustle bustle of big city life.

  5. This looks like the perfect place to retreat on a weekend. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city lights and noise. I can imagine myself in the hammock perfectly content watching the water flow by.

  6. This is such a lovely place. I love such places for weekend. When in Bangalore, I went to a lot of retreats nearby. Malnad retreat looks awesome. You seem to have a great time there. I miss India already looking at your pictures.
