Must try Vegetarian food in Hong Kong

Food food food and more food!!

With the numerous number of Dai Pai Dongs (open-air food stalls), Cha Chaan Tengs (tea restaurant) and the fine dining restaurants and their amazing display of food, a person can hardly control himself from not trying out the local delicacies offered here.

It was clearly visible from the bustling restaurants and local cafes that the Cantonese love their food as much as they love fashion. However, being vegetarians we thought we had to narrow down our options when it came to trying the local food but we had a big surprise in store!!! Not only there are many pure vegetarian eateries all over the city, but also most of the restaurants offered a great choice of veg food in their menu.

The Cha Chaan Tangs had become our daily breakfast hangout during the stay where we relished on the Hong Kong’s famous Yuanyang: a mixture of both coffee and tea (as much as it sounds weird that’s one of the best beverage we ever had). Along with this, we would suggest trying the crispy bun with condensed milk/sesame.

When asked for local favorite food, our hotel manager suggested us to try the steamed buns (dumplings). One would think these would be the regular dumplings with shredded veggie fillings, but we were served with the one of the cutest looking steamed buns with varied choice of filling like lotus seed, peach, date, and red bean. Among all the different places we tried, the best buns were from the Nan Lian Vegetarian Restaurant at the Nan Lian Gardens in Diamond Hill, Kowloon. Since photography is not allowed at Nan Lian Restaurant, we are unable to provide with the picture.

While in Hong Kong, never fail to taste the famous pineapple bun (Bo Lo Bao), egg tarts and the coconut tarts which is available at any of the local bakeries like Kum Wah Cafe, Maxims, etc. The pineapple bun is only named so because of the pineapple-like upper crust and does not actually contain pineapple. Another favorite dessert among the locals is the Red bean soup, which is served hot or cold.

Apart from these we also tried some yummy desserts from Mango Cha Cha (at Kowloon) and Honeymoon Desserts (at the Western Market), which was pure heaven!!

Note: For all those people looking for vegetarian food in Hong Kong just say “noh sihk jaai” ( I am a vegetarian) at the restaurant and they will definitely whip up something special for you.
